Teeth Whitening Costs

Professional whitening at the dentist is generally the most expensive, however there are cheaper alternatives that can produce a similar result.

Home whitening kits are the ideal solution, combining both affordability and convenience. Keep in mind that the cheapest option is not necessarily the best. We reveal which one we think is the best value for money.

The Cheapest Method

The cheapest teeth whitening method would be toothpastes and whitening strips. These range from $20 to $50.

The toothpastes mostly serve to clean your teeth, so generally speaking, all toothpastes are whitening toothpastes. However to get the bleaching required to actually whiten teeth, you can use strips.

Strips sit across the front of your teeth and are unobtrusive enough that they can be worn to work. They are less effective than gels though, as strips are unable to reach between gaps and such, and would not cover well for people with crooked teeth.

Whitening gels cost approximately $50 to $100 and are used with trays which cover your teeth with the gel in place. This enables the whitening agent to reach all over your teeth. Home gel kits are similar to what a dentist would do, except that the home kits have a lower concentration of peroxide. This simply means it will take a little bit longer before your teeth are fully whitened.

The Most Expensive Method

By far the most costly teeth whitening procedure is one performed by a dentist, at the dental clinic.

Dentists make a lot of money, and that has got to come from somewhere. You are paying for the dentist's time, paying to be in his office, paying to be greeted by a pretty receptionist and hovered around by a cute dental nurse. You are forking out your hard-earned money so the dentist can meet his boat installments.

That may sound a little far-fetched but the reality is, teeth whitening is not a precise or specialised medical procedure. It is not surgery and does not require a fully trained professional. Pretty much anyone can do it, and all in the comfort of their own home.

No-one is disputing that the quality at the dentist will not be top notch. Considering the cost, it had better be. But is it really worth paying thousands of dollars when there are alternatives that can do the job just as well, at a fraction of the price?

Which Method Is For Me?

The bottom line is, if you can afford it and do not care about cost, go see your dentist. But if you want to potentially save hundreds of dollars, try a home whitening, do-it-yourself kit.

At the very least, try a whitening kit, and if the results are not what you expect, then by all means book an appointment with your dentist. You can even get whitening kits for free, so it even costs you nothing to try.
