Natural Teeth Whitening

There is a large amount of information on "natural teeth whitening" out there. Some people have good results with some, and others not so good.

Some of these teeth whitening home remedies are can also be dangerous to your teeth if not done properly, while others may be worth your time. The most common of these home remedies are detailed below.

Brushing Teeth With Lemon Juice

The reason that lemon juice works is that it causes the teeth to lose calcium (which gives teeth some of their off-white color). Calcium is a major component of healthy teeth, and once it is lost, your teeth become very susceptible to decay. Only use this method sparingly.

Brushing Teeth Using Wood Ash (i.e. from your fireplace)

The reason wood ash whitens your teeth is because it contains potassium hydroxide (aka lye). However, only hard wood ash contains significant concentrations of potassium hydroxide.

You may want to exercise caution when using hard wood ash too often as a tooth whitening agent. The harshness of the potassium hydroxide could significantly damage your teeth over time.

Whitening Teeth With Strawberries

It is very important to brush your teeth well after using any strawberry treatment. Strawberries do contain natural sugar, and leaving them on your teeth for long periods of time could cause cavities. And the very ingredient that whitens our teeth, malic acid, can be harmful if left on too long.

Due to the strawberry's acid content, it's probably a good idea not to use strawberry treatments too often even if you do brush well afterward. Once a week should be sufficient.

Rubbing Your Teeth With Olive Oil

First, brush your teeth really well. Then get a white wash cloth, pour some extra virgin olive oil on it and scrub your teeth.

Whitening Using Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great natural teeth whitening remedy. Baking soda is great for removing stains, and also has strong anti-bacterial properties, which is helpful in killing the bacteria that can cause plaque.

Also, baking soda can reduce any acids that may harm your tooth enamel.

Gargling Peroxide

This method calls for gargling of hydrogen peroxide (yes, the kind found in your medicine cabinet) as a way to whiten your teeth. It may work, but you may notice some tooth and gum sensitivity.

Even though you may experience some discomfort, whitening with peroxide is safe as long as you don't swallow it. The concentration of peroxide found in hydrogen peroxide is much lower than the over-the-counter whiteners, so you should be prepared for less drastic results.

While natural teeth whitening remedies are inexpensive and the ingredients are easy to come by, the effectiveness is questionable. If you want painless, dramatic results, your time would be better spent on a proven whitening product.
